Based on mathematical modeling the analysis of dispersion distribution of sea surface slopes on ranges of waves creating them is carried out. The functions χ(k) describing the proportion of slope dispersion of a given range from the total variance of slopes created by waves of all scales in different meteorological situations are constructed. The situations when the wave field is developing and fully developed are considered. It is shown that at the stage of developing waves the contribution of short waves to the dispersion of slopes is greater in comparison with fully developed waves. With a weak wind, the form of the function χ(k) changes greatly when the wind speed changes, with a strong wind, it acquires a universal form. The limitations of currently existing spectral models for their use in the analysis of Earth remote sensing data from space are discussed. First of all, the limitations are associated with a variety of factors that determine the thin topographic structure of the sea surface, which are difficult to take into account in mathematical modeling. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2021.
