This study deals with verification of statistical modeling for wave surface elevation. Several nonlinear models based on the solution of hydrodynamic equations are considered. It is shown that such models do not describe the whole variety of situations observed in the field of sea waves. A fundamental limitation, they describe only distributions with positive skewness and positive excess kurtosis. A series of field experiments conducted in different areas of the World Ocean indicates that negative asymmetry and negative excess kurtosis are not uncommon. There is another limitation, nonlinear models are one-parameter. The probability density function of surface elevations depends only on the wave steepness. As a result, in models the relationship between skewness and excess kurtosis is deterministic, in field studies it is stochastic. © 2023 Author(s).
