An analysis skewness bias (SB) was made of the altimetry determination of the level of the Sea of Azov, caused by the deviation of the distribution of wave elevations of the sea surface from the Gauss distribution. The analysis was carried out on the basis of a model representing the reflected impulse of the altimeter in the form of a verification of functions depending on the measurements conditions, the technical characteristics of the altimeter, and the state of the sea surface. The SB errors calculated for the Sea of Azov are significantly lower than those for the Black Sea. It is shown that the maximum errors $$left| {SB}
ight|$$ for the Sea of Azov reach the level of 1–2 cm, while for the deep-water zone of the Black Sea they are about 40 cm. The average annual error level $$left| {SB}
ight|$$ for the Sea of Azov is less than 1 cm, for the Black Sea −17 cm. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.
