Abstract: The study of the structure of the water flow and bottom sediment transport processes is a relevant and important area of oceanological, hydraulic, and hydrological research. To carry out such studies, a wide range of methodological and technical tools is required. Therefore, it is important to create new devices and methods that will provide up-to-date information about the dynamics of water flow and sedimentation processes both in field and laboratory conditions. The article deals with application of the PIV method to solve problems involved with studying the movement of a water flow and suspended particles carried by it. The developed methodology and technical tools for determining the flow velocity are described. The results of laboratory studies of systems of transverse coastal protection structures are presented. The technical tools used with the PIV method make it possible to obtain the necessary data to determine water and sediment expenditures when transported by a turbulent flow. The developed devices make it possible to obtain instantaneous and averaged fields of the flow velocity distribution in wide spatial and temporal ranges. The established velocity distributions and revealed mass transfer characteristics can be used to scientifically substantiate studies in the design of coastal protection, channel-regulating marine and river structures, as well as for the environmental feasibility of water management measures. © 2021, Pleiades Publishing, Inc.
